German Muslim Leader Rejects Invite to Controversial Opera

A German Muslim leader declined Sunday to attend the re-staging of a controversial Berlin opera which mocks the founders of religion. Germany's interior minister had invited Muslims to attend a performance on Monday.

In September, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin cancelled Mozart's Idomeneo because of a provocative closing scene depicting the Prophet Mohammed's severed head. But following a public outcry over bowing to pressure from Islamic radicals, the show was rescheduled for Monday evening and Dec. 29 when it will be performed amid tight security.

Aiman Mazyek, secretary general of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, said he would not attend the performance because he did not want to be used for political purposes.

"I go to the opera to relax and not to be thrown into the same pot with religion, art and politics," he told Sunday's Der Tagespiegel newspaper. "I am a member of a religious community, not an arts critic or responsible for matters of taste."

Last month Ali Kizilkaya, chairman of the Council of Islam, already rejected an invitation from Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble to attend the opera.

German leaders to attend amid tight security

Schäuble himself plans to be at Monday evening's performance along with Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and Federal Culture Secretary Bernd Neumann.

Police said they would step up security, although there had been no specific threat. Extra officers would be on duty outside the opera house and plainclothes police would mingle with the audience, said Benedikt Scherlebeck, a spokesman for Berlin city authorities.

The anti-religion scene, not in the original Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart opera, was devised by director Hans Neuenfels in 2003 and shows the hero laughing at the severed heads of the Prophet Mohammed, Jesus Christ and Buddha.

Germany's opera-loving chancellor, Angela Merkel, led criticism of the cancellation, while Germany's most senior Lutheran bishop, Wolfgang Huber, criticized the decapitation scene as "not ideal."

Circumcising adult men has potential to save millions

WASHINGTON—Circumcising men cuts in half their risk of being infected with the AIDS virus, and could prevent hundreds of thousands or even millions of new infections, researchers said yesterday.
Circumcision worked so well the researchers stopped two large clinical trials in Kenya and Uganda to announce the results, although they cautioned the procedure doesn't make men immune to the virus.
Public health leaders hailed the results as pointing to a potentially powerful way to reduce HIV infections in Africa, the continent hardest hit by AIDS.
"It does have the potential to prevent many tens of thousands, many hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of infections over coming years," Dr. Kevin De Cock, director of the World Health Organization's Department of HIV/AIDS, told reporters.
The link between circumcision and HIV prevention was noted as long ago as the late 1980s. The first major clinical trial, of 3,000 men in South Africa, found last year that circumcision cut the HIV risk by 60 per cent.
Still, many AIDS specialists were awaiting the National Institutes of Health's study results as a final confirmation.
"Male circumcision can lower both an individual's risk of infection, and hopefully the rate of HIV spread through the community," said AIDS expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Cells in the foreskin of the penis are particularly susceptible to the HIV virus, he explained
But circumcision is not perfect protection. Men must not quit using condoms, and it offers no protection from HIV acquired through anal sex or injection drug use, he noted.
Male circumcision is common at birth in Canada, but rare in large swaths of the population in sub-Saharan Africa, home to more than half the world's 40 million HIV-infected people.
The WHO plans a global meeting next year on policies promoting safe circumcision.
